Begin your exploration of traditional Blackletter calligraphy in this 3-hour, in-person workshop with professional calligrapher Aline Chan!
Also sometimes known as Fraktur or Old English, Blackletter is a style of broad edged calligraphy that can be found in a range of documents from old medieval manuscripts to vintage newspapers and modern certificates. It evokes a timeless sense of tradition, and presents many opportunities for creative expression.
This workshop with Aline will focus on the basic geometry and techniques of Blackletter, giving you the necessary skills to get started on your own practice of this beautiful calligraphy style. The workshop will also include an introduction to ornamental versal—the decorative capital letter found at the beginning of a verse or section in medieval illuminated manuscripts.
